Some days I just can't think of a title.
I'm in the kitchen, helping my mom start cooking dinner.  She has Little House on the Prairie on.  She asks me what Melissa Gilbert is doing today.  I say I don't know; TV movies or something.

"I wonder if she's still married to what's-his-name."

I cannot let her see my secret and embarrassing crush!  "Um, Bruce Boxleitner, right?  I think they are.  Still married.  Um.  Yeah."

I do not set off any of her alarms.  After a minute or so: "Wasn't he on that show you like?"

"Yes.  Babylon 5."

"No, the remake one."

"Yes, he's in TRON.  The new one, too."

"No.  The show they did a remake of."  I don't answer her, because I have no idea what she's talking about.  Another minute passes.  "The one with Mary McDonnell."

"Battlestar Galactica?  He wasn't on that."

"Are you sure?"

"Mom, that was Edward James Olmos."

"No, the original."

"That was Dirk Benedict."

Five solid minutes pass.  Then: "Buck Rogers!"

I came down and got on IMDB.  I don't know if I have the heart to tell her that no, Bruce Boxleitner was not on the 1970s remake of Buck Rogers.  I do not even know what she was thinking.  Still, bless.  ♥

This morning I helped my Grandpa run some errands.  We took his dog in for shots and his annual check-up; we did his bi-weekly trip to the store to buy two specific items (juice and milk today); we finally used the gift card he got for his birthday back in March to buy him some fleece-lined jeans.  We stopped at Wendy's for lunch.  Now, I have not eaten at Wendy's in a powerful long time.  I saw that they had a new salad, and that it looked tasty - apples and cranberries and pecans and grilled chicken.  I'm not a fan of salad dressing, and to enjoy a dry salad I need a lot of flavor.

So I bought that salad.

Then I went back to Grandpa's house to eat lunch with him.

Then I opened up that salad.

Hee! Your mom's too cute. *g*

Oh, and Melissa Gilbert was in the Broadway production of Little House on the Prairie for a while. xphilehb and I went when it came to Omaha, and we were hoping to see Bruce Boxleitner there, supporting his wife. Alas, no. But the play was good.
xphilehb: SMK - Lee Amandaxphilehb on October 5th, 2010 09:12 pm (UTC)
Yes, their son was in the show too. I mean, really, he could not have come to Omaha to support both this wife and son and make a couple of fangirls swoon? Would that have been so hard?!

The story about your day totally made me laugh. Which - thank you. You have succeeded where many have failed.

Tell your mom that Melissa Gilbert was doing Little House on the Prairie on Broadway until... Julyish? She was playing Ma. AND MICHAEL BOXLEITNER WAS IN IT TOO - as Willie Olson. Yay family musical talent! The only reason I didn't go when it came through town was that I found out about it too late and it was sold out by then.

And then she broke her back (OMFG.) On the same day she was scheduled to have surgery, Bruce was doing a sci-fi convention promoting TRON. My faith in his ability to be The Most Awesome Man Ever plummeted about 15 percent and I told my husband that if I ever have to have surgery HE SURE AS SHIT BETTER BE THERE WHEN I WAKE UP. (And then he reminded me that he was, that one time. "Remember?" And I remembered, and yes - my husband is therefore at least 15 percent more awesome than Bruce, now.)
Shannonkungfuwaynewho on October 5th, 2010 11:41 pm (UTC)
My knee-jerk response was that they must have agreed beforehand that he could do the convention. Then I was like, but surgery. Every surgery is risky, even minor ones; back surgery? I'd want to be there. So then I'm thinking maybe she knew how important it was to him that he do something for a big project for the first time in awhile? Because I can't imagine there are that many contractually obligated cons, and if there were, your wife having surgery on her broken back (JFC, what did she do?!) would be enough of an excuse.

I'd still like to give him the benefit of the doubt! I can't see him as being callous. So they must have come to an agreement for whatever reason. IDK.
nhpwnhpw on October 6th, 2010 12:02 am (UTC)
Yeah, that's what I figured too. (I can't believe I actually devoted a lot of brain cells to trying to reason this out so he is not an asshole who was like "SEEYA BYE, good luck, let me know how that surgery turns out.")

Actually, there's a People Magazine article about Mikey's birth (with f'ing adorable pictures), which had to have been really scary, and at one point she was just like, "Honey, why don't you go home, shower, get some sleep, go for a run, because you'll probably be up all night." OMG. I get the impression she's just a very selfless woman like that, who would just say - I'll be fine, go do your thing, and I'll see you when you get back.

But a tiny little part of me still says he should have canceled and stayed with her. (Just a tiny part.)

Lord. Those pictures. My ovaries just cried out. Then I reminded them that they would not be having any babies with Bruce Boxleitner and to shut the hell up.

I just looked up Dirk Benedict, and... well... I'm sure it's just the 70s hair (and this moustache) and that usually he's a decent, non-p0rny looking guy....

Hrm.

Yeah, your mom's cute. My poor mom knows a lot more about my obsessions than she really cares to.
Shannon: bsg revelations karakungfuwaynewho on October 5th, 2010 11:43 pm (UTC)
Benedict was kind of 70s cute on the show, but now that I know he's a total dickweed I can't even look at him anymore. He wrote this article about Starbuck being turned into a female character in the remake.

Seriously, what a dickweed. (He wrote that after he met with Katee prior to the miniseries being shot, and playing nice.)
Holly: Starbuck bwhollywobbles on October 6th, 2010 02:49 pm (UTC)
Wow. Just, wow. What an unimaginable douche. I... just... yeah. So much more I could say.
Shannon: bsg opera housekungfuwaynewho on October 6th, 2010 03:03 pm (UTC)
Yeah. What's ironic is that Katee's Starbuck is a million times more badass and awesome than Benedict's Starbuck ever dreamed of being. Such sour grapes. What's funny is that if he had played nice he might have scored a guest appearance a la Richard Hatch (who ended up being so awesome and gracious that it turned into a recurring gig) and been relevant again.

Sucks to be you, Dirk Benedict. Enjoy being a douche-y has-been.

Ok, you know what? I'm just gonna say it. Not only is he sexist with a farcically old fashioned, simple view of the world, he's got no depth whatsoever. Sometimes I think it's a good thing people don't live longer than they do, so that people like him with no hope of changing will leave the world to the rest of us instead of poisoning it with their ideas any longer. Cruel? Probably.

I love this conversation. It reminds me of conversations with my own mother. Except I no longer try to hide my obsessions. My favorite is when she comes out and knows things merely because I've talked about them a lot or she's been forced to watch them with me a lot. Like, she knows the "Small Potatoes" episode of The X-Files by its title. <3
Shannon: xf umbrellaskungfuwaynewho on October 5th, 2010 11:44 pm (UTC)
I wish my mom was like that! She remembers nothing, and most of our conversations are like that. I mean, seriously, my BSG fervor was total and long-lasting, and she still couldn't remember the name. So sad.
ghanima sun: j/dghanimasun on October 7th, 2010 03:49 am (UTC)
Awww, your mom! My mom really has no choice on hearing about my fannish obsessions. Plus I even have to go to my parents house to watch Fringe (no cable tv for me!) so she is getting to watch that, though I'm not sure how much she's into it!

Also glad I'm not the only one that has an embarrassing crush on Sheridan/BB.

(And blue cheese dressing is just gross. Fact.)
Shannon: b5 sheridan looks downkungfuwaynewho on October 7th, 2010 01:21 pm (UTC)
My mom is fundamentally uninterested in my fannish stuff. I think she's still sad all her daughters ended up geeks instead of little social butterflies. (Well, her youngest is still into doing to dances and buying clothes and makeup, but she's also in that teenage "when I love something it's my ENTIRE WORLD" phase that's kinda driving my mom crazy.)

I wonder about people who don't have a crush on BB in B5. He is so infinitely handsome, srsly.
