HOLY SHIT YOU GUYS
YOU GUYS.

HOLY SHIT.

SO LIKE I DIDN'T REALLY FOLLOW THE AWARDS SEASON THIS YEAR LIKE I HAVE IN THE PAST JUST BECAUSE I HAVEN'T HAD THE TIME.

I LIKED LA LA LAND, I DID.

BUT THEN I SAW MOONLIGHT AND IT WAS FUCKING. PERFECT. IN EVERY. WAY. AND I WAS BASICALLY PRE-DEVASTATED BECAUSE I KNEW IT WOULD NEVER WIN.

BECAUSE LA LA LAND WAS WINNING EVERYTHING.

I DIDN'T EVEN DO A PREDICTIONS POST THIS YEAR - ALTHOUGH PLOT TWIST - I FILLED OUT A BALLOT TO WIN MOVIE TICKETS AND I FIGURED THE ONLY WAY I WOULD WIN WAS TO GO BIG OR GO HOME SO I PICKED MOONLIGHT FOR THAT.  BUT I DIDN'T WANT TO DO A POST HERE BECAUSE I WAS FAIRLY CERTAIN LA LA LAND WAS WINNING AND I JUST WASN'T FEELING IT.

AND THEN THEY ANNOUNCED LA LA LAND HAD WON.

I TURNED OFF THE TV.  I WENT TO MY WRITING DESK.  I WROTE MY DAILY JOURNAL ENTRY.  I WROTE "I REALLY WANTED MOONLIGHT TO WIN SO THAT SUCKS.  OH WELL, IT HAPPENS EVERY YEAR."

I BRUSHED MY TEETH AND GOT READY FOR BED.

I WAS CHECKING THE NEWS BEFORE TAKING MY CONTACTS OUT AND MOOOOOONLIIIIIIIGHT WON.  IT WOOOOOOOOOONNNNNN.

YOU GUYS.

THIS IS BASICALLY ALL I'VE EVER WANTED MY ENTIRE LIFE, WHEN THE MOVIE I LOVE ALMOST INEVITABLY DOESN'T WIN.  THIS IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO ME.  I WANT TO THANK GOD AND ALSO JESUS.

I WILL BE SUSTAINED BY THIS FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.

MY SISTER THOUGHT 45 HAD BEEN IMPEACHED OR SOMETHING BECAUSE I RAN OUT OF MY BEDROOM DEADASS SCREAMING "OH MY GOD OH MY GOD!" AND IT'S BASICALLY THE SAME THING.

I did not care for La La Land (I guess I'm not the right audience), but I adored Moonlight, and I was keeping everything crossed. SO YAY!!!

I thought La La Land was very good, but Moonlight was just so much better, like. It was perfect. I hate that there's already talk out there about "sticking it to Tr*mp" and "this is just backlash against Oscars So White from last year," missing how just spectacular this movie is in every way.

I liked La La Land, but I think Hollywood was too far up it's own ass with it. Like sorry Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, that was not your best acting work and your singing was not good enough. It wasn't a bad movie because of that, but didn't deserve the amount of praise it got.

That mix up was probably rough for the La La Land crew but I don't feel too bad for them because I'm so happy for Moonlight. I watched at a friends and while we were annoyed we left the tv on because she was checking tumblr on her phone and I was looking for my tram to go home and then she was 'OMG LOOK SOMETHING IS HAPPENING' and then we freaked outXD
And Moonlight is finally coming to theaters here next week. I have been waiting for it and I am so ready! I don't actually know what to expect besides that I hope I will love it as much as everyone else seems to do.

On a completely different note, did I ever tell you that I am writing my MA thesis on Fury Road? I thought you should know because I remember talking to you about it way back when it was just a hazy idea.
Shannon: lotr galadrielkungfuwaynewho on February 27th, 2017 07:59 pm (UTC)
Ooo! That sounds awesome! What exactly is your thesis covering?
Martine: Random/animated catla_loony on February 27th, 2017 08:34 pm (UTC)
The portrayal of the female characters. I'm mostly going to cover Furiosa and the wives, and then the Vuvalini a bit. My focus is wether or not they are objectified and if not how not and why that is special in the movie landscape (I touch on objectification in my theoretical part and how it's just everywhere in the visuals and the narratives).
Shannonkungfuwaynewho on February 28th, 2017 04:46 pm (UTC)
Ooo, that'll be great! There's so much to talk about in that vein. I found it really interesting how Max's first glimpse of the wives is very much shot in a typical male gaze sort of way - closeups on their bodies, all the skimpy clothes, they're wet - and how everything thereafter is a sort of deconstruction of that. Miller did such a great job with that aspect of the movie.
Martine: Random/animated catla_loony on March 1st, 2017 09:44 am (UTC)
Yeah how the shots are often not male gazey is one part of my analysis to be^^ Even that first meeting with the wives is not as bad as it could be, the close ups are very specific about things that are not really sexy aka Angharads pregnant belly and that chastity belt. I'm pretty certain that the movie manages to not give me gracious boob shots even though the wives have to scramble for clothes. But I'll have a slow rewatch (or multiple) in a few weeks hopefully to confirm this.

Yeah - La La Land was good. I don't think it was great, and certainly not better than La La Land.

That said, I felt so bad for all of them up on that stage. I can't imagine going through that swing of emotions. I thought they all handled it really well.

Moonlight is just so good. It's not necessarily an easy movie to watch, but it's just incredibly well-made and touching. I hope you enjoy it!
Martinela_loony on February 27th, 2017 08:35 pm (UTC)
Yeah I liked how the one producer handled it when he called the Moonlight crew up on stage. He seemed to be happy for them even though it meant he lost.
cath822cath822 on February 27th, 2017 07:33 pm (UTC)
Ha! I've been wanting to see Moonlight, and it was playing briefly, but now it's only in the far-away theater, but I've heard it's amazing. That was crazy how it won - I did keep watching during the acceptance speech, and I'm pretty sure I actually yelled "WHAAAAAAA?"

I liked La La Land too, and even more so because I love old-school musicals, but the singing/dancing wasn't amazing, and the movie was only good for me until the last sequence, when I feel like it really lunged into greatness. I would have been happy with it winning, but I'm happy for the underdog.
Shannonkungfuwaynewho on February 27th, 2017 08:01 pm (UTC)
Yeah, like, I liked La La Land? I thought it was a really good movie, and I enjoyed it. I wished it had been more of a musical - like you said, the singing/dancing really wasn't all that great, and for me the best musical sequence was the opening, which didn't really include any actual characters from the movie. I feel like they sort of played with the musical genre without ever really committing to it.

Which, Emma did a good job (Best Actress? I don't know...) but neither she nor Ryan had the actual chops to carry a true musical. Having a few more songs, having more difficult dancing sequences, having better singers, would have really elevated this movie to the next level.
cath822cath822 on February 28th, 2017 01:56 am (UTC)
Yeah, I enjoyed La La Land, but I hope the Oscar win means that Moonlight comes back into theaters here. I feel like La La Land already got all the recognition it needed: best director, music, actress, etc.

Emma was good. I mean, really good, but not necessarily better than Amy Adams in Arrival (which she didn't even get nominated for, ugh - that was one of our fav movies this year).

The thing is, I think there are a lot of actors out there with genuine musical theater talent/experience. Greg once asked me about the possibility of remaking Singin' in the Rain, which I found kind of sacrilegious, but then he said, "What if the male leads were NPH and Joseph Gordon-Levitt?" and I was like, "...damn it, I would watch the shit out of that."
Shannonkungfuwaynewho on February 28th, 2017 04:48 pm (UTC)
I think Moonlight comes out on DVD today! Couldn't ask for better timing. But a lot of theaters get the best picture winner back for a limited engagement, so maybe.

Yeah, I was stunned that Amy Adams didn't get in. I wasn't as in love with Arrival as a lot of people but she did stellar work in that one.

There are so many actors who can sing and dance! Definitely JGL - he would have been great, I think. I like Emma all right, but damn was she struggling to sing; it really undercut the power of that audition song, for sure.

I actually haven't seen either yet. I suppose I should.
Shannonkungfuwaynewho on February 28th, 2017 04:46 pm (UTC)
Oh, definitely. Don't get me wrong - La La Land is a wonderful gem of a film, very imaginative and fun. But Moonlight is on a whole other level.
